World Economic Forum (WEF)

World Economic Forum is an international body committed to improving the state of the world by engaging business, political, academic, and other leaders of society to shape global, regional and industry agendas. It is headquartered in Cologny, Switzerland.

WEF meets annually in Davos, Switzerland. Its founder is Klaus Schwab, who is also the writer of The Fourth Industrial Revolution.

WEF acts as a think tank and publishes a wide range of reports:

      • ranked India at 30th position. placed India in Legacy group (strong current base, at risk for future)
      • placed Japan at top
    • Inclusive Development Index
      • based on three pillars – growth and development, inclusion, intergenerational equity and sustainability.
      • designed as an alternative to GDP, the index reflects more closely the criteria by which the people evaluate their countries’ economic progress.
      • IDI 2018 ranked India 62 out of 74 emerging countries, below Nepal, Sri Lanka
    • Environmental Performance Index 2018
      • released by Yale Univ + Columbia Univ + WEF
      • ranks India 178 out of 180 countries – for poor performance in environment health policy and deaths due to air pollution.
    • Energy Transition Index
      • ranks countries on how well they are able to balance energy security and access with environmental sustainability and affordability
      • India ranked 78th. The report acknowledges that India has taken bold measures to improve energy access, efficiency and deployment of renewable sources of energy.
